High numbers of red blood cells may indicate:

  • Low oxygen tension in the blood.
  • Congenital heart disease.
  • Cor pulmonale.
  • Pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Polycythemia vera.
  • Dehydration (such as from severe diarrhea).
  • Renal (kidney) disease with high erythropoietin production.
