Around age 4, children with Batten disease usually start showing symptoms such as impaired muscle coordination (ataxia), involuntary twitching (myoclonus), and speech and developmental disorders. Eyesight then usually begins to decline, and affected children generally become wheelchair-bound, then bedridden.
