Chakra meditation brings all the benefits of meditation while balancing and nourishing your energy system. The term chakra means wheel of light. Chakras, part of your aura, serve as spiritual energy centers of your body.
With chakra meditation, you nourish yourself with healing energy by focusing your attention and imagination to bring each of the seven major chakras its characteristic healthy color/energy. You support your natural healing.
Let’s get started.
7 Steps for Chakra Meditation
Prepare as you would for any meditation: choose a quiet space and get comfortable.
Sitting is usually advised since it’s easy to fall asleep when lying down (unless you want to go to sleep).
Put your body in proper alignment. Keep your spine and head straight but not rigid. It may be helpful to imagine a skyhook with a string attached to the top of your head gently lifting and aligning the head and spine to the proper alignment.
Be always kind to yourself. If your mind wanders during the meditation, just notice it without judgment and gently bring it back to the meditation.
Step 1
Focus on your breathing, noticing the gentle flow of the air as it moves in and out of your body. Breathe in comfort, nourishing oxygen. Breathe out any tension, dis-ease, impurities. Experience the miracle of your breath.
Step 2
Now imagine breathing in a healing nurturing light or energy. Bring it in through the crown of your head, all the way down through your body, and out through your toes.
You may think of it as divine love, you may visualize it as a color of white or gold, or another quality that nourishes you.
I imagine breathing in love, wisdom, and clarity.
Continue nourishing yourself with this energy until you feel ready for the next step.
Step 3
Now bring the earth energy up through your feet and out through your crown. This energy is an earthy red. Feel it nourishing and grounding you to the earth. Notice its warm comfort.
Continue nourishing yourself with this energy until you feel ready for the next step.
Step 4
Bring your attention to the lower pelvis, your root chakra. Imagine that you are breathing in and out of the area for a few breaths then notice how it feels and how it looks with your mind’s eye (your imagination).
Now, imagine breathing a clear red energy into your root chakra, and as you exhale breath out any impurities or other colors. Spend as long as you like just breathing in the nourishing clear red energy and breathing out all dis-ease or impurities.
Step 5
When ready follow the same process as in step 4 as you move on to the other chakras using each chakra’s characteristic color (see below). Spend as much time as feels right for you.
- Root Chakra – Red
- Sacral Chakra – Reddish Orange
- Solar Plexus Chakra – Yellow
- Heart – Green
- Throat – Blue
- Forehead – Indigo
- Crown – Violet
Now imagine the violet energy of the crown chakra as representing your higher self…your pure essence and breathe it down through your entire body….cleansing and nourishing as it flows.
Step 6
Now imagine yourself surrounded by a soft nurturing white light that envelops your whole body, followed by a silvery light, then a beautiful radiant golden light…all protecting and healing you.
Step 7
Conclude your meditation by taking a deep breath and silently saying a word or short phrase that affirms you like, “peace,” “gratitude,” or “I am well.”
Chakra meditation, like anything new, takes practice for its best benefit. Most people report it brings more peace to their life, some find it energizing, and some use it to help their healing.
Others want to deepen their meditation by learning more about chakras and other forms of chakra meditation.
Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field by Barbara Ann Brennan is a great resource.
You may want to practice by recording these instructions or having a friend read them to you. There are also many audiovisual resources to help you too.
Chakra mediation with practice is easy to do. You just need to be willing to focus your attention and use your imagination while following these 7 steps.
Enjoy chakra meditation.
