Energy field healing is a dynamic process of harmony within yourself and universal life energy.
Your energy field’s ever changing character is the subtle manifestation of you in relationship to your environment and the universal flow of life energy.
Like all living things, you fundamentally consist of energy and posses an energy field, also called aura. Your aura is so subtle that Western science has yet to measure it, though it has been detected with methods like Kirlian photography.
Energy field healing is a natural function of a healthy human energy system. When healthy, your energy is balanced, free-flowing, and open to the universal flow of life energy.
Eastern cultures have long recognized the importance of universal life energy and the human energy system in health and healing.
Over time, various cultures developed energy field healing practices such as qigong, yoga, Reiki, therapeutic touch, and acupuncture, and acupressure to balance energy and help it flow freely.
Like your physical body, the human energy system has an anatomy with each part preforming important functions.
Energy Field Healing: Human Energy System Anatomy
The human energy system consists of the aura, chakras, and meridians.
The Human Aura
The human aura is a luminous field that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body. It is a highly sensitive perceptual system that constantly interacts with and communicates with everything around you: the environment, the consciousness of others, and the life energy of the universe.
You can gain greater awareness of this subtle information source though honoring your intuition and appreciating the subtle physical manifestation of your energy field.
You can experience this field by doing the exercise in Holistic Energy Healing: Balance and Enhance Your Life Force.
Although you may not be consciously aware of your aura, you likely sense it at times.
The sensing of this subtle energy is demonstrated with comments like these:
“I felt open and expansive.”
“I felt closed down and contracted.”
Your aura is created by the energies flowing through your body as well as your thoughts and emotions.
Through their observations, researchers have created theoretical models that divide the aura into several layers, reports Barbara Brennan, in Hands of Light. Each layer has it own function and is associated with one of the major seven chakras.
The layers become more subtle as they extend from the physical body.
- The First Layer associates with the root chakra (located at the base of the spine). It is associated with physical functioning and physical sensation.
- The Second Layer associates with the sacral chakra and the emotional aspects of the person.
- The Third Layer associates with the solar plexus chakra and the mental life of the person.
- The Fourth Layer associates with the heart chakra and is the vehicle for love, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.
- The Fifth Layer associates with the throat chakra and higher or divine will including the power of the word, speaking things into being, listening, and taking responsibility for actions.
- The Sixth Layer associates with the head chakra and celestial love. “It is a love that extends beyond human range of love and encompasses all life,” says Brennan.
- The Seventh Layer associates with the crown chakra and the higher mind including knowing and integrating our spiritual and physical makeup.
Your health is affected by your aura and your aura is affected by your health. Some believe that an illness or healing and health first manifest in the aura. That is why energy healers often treat through the aura.
Chakras
Chakras are swirling energy vortexes in the human energy field. Their tips point into the body and their open ends extend to the edge of each layer of the field they associate with (see above).
Chakras act as transformers. They take in the universal life energy that always surrounds you and transform it into subtle frequencies your energy system needs to keep you healthy.
Your energy field has many chakras associated with areas of the body. These chakras vary from smaller chakras like those located in the palms of your hands to the larger seven major chakras located in the front of the body.
The seven major chakras are paired with their counterpart on the back of the body. They have three major functions reports Brennan:
- To vitalize the aura and physical body.
- To develop greater awareness or consciousness.
- To transmit energy between the aura levels.

Energy Meridians
Life energy also flows throughout your body in an invisible web of streams called “meridians.”
Much like the vast flow of waterways that nourish the earth or the blood that flows through vessels in your body; these energy streams empty into one another, connecting and nourishing organ systems and the interior and exterior body.
Meridians contain energy points, also called “gates,” that are especially sensitive to bioelectrical impulses. They act as subtle portals that open or close to adjust the flow of life energy (called “chi” or “qi” in China and “ki” in Japan). These energy point are used in acupuncture and acupressure.
Meridians and their points were discovered, numbered, and mapped more than 5,000 years ago in China. More recently, western science validated this human energy system using sensitive electrical devices as well.
Energy Field Healing Key Points
Energy field healing is a natural function of a healthy human energy system. Each of the human energy system components (the aura, chakras and meridians) performs important functions.
When healthy, your energy is balanced, free flowing, and open to the universal flow of life energy.
