Your sacral chakra, like all chakras, takes in the universal life energy that always surrounds you and transforms it into subtle frequencies your energy system needs to keep you healthy.
It vitalizes your aura and physical body, helps you develop greater awareness or consciousness, and transmits energy within your energy system.
The sacral chakra specifically supports creativity in all dimensions. It nurtures healthy sexuality and is a source for passion. This second chakra along with the first or root chakra, also supports the ability to provide for yourself. Its affirmation is, “I feel.”
This 2nd chakra is associated with the reproductive system, lower back, spine, and kidneys.
Dysfunction in this area may lead to impotence; frigidity; uterine, bladder, or kidney trouble; as well as low back pain according to Anodea Judith in Wheels of Light.
Helping Your Sacral Chakra
You can help the health of this chakra by using chakra meditations, nurturing yourself, and doing exercises that move energy and create more flexibility in the hips, lower abdomen, and pelvis. Releasing pent up emotions may help too. Here are some examples:
Sacral Chakra Meditation
Sit with both feet on the floor (or in a lotus or semi-lotus position). Straighten your back while holding your head up high with your chin slightly tucked in. You might imagine that there is a helium balloon attached to the top of your head helping to gently support the straightness of your spine while respecting its natural curvature.
Take three deep breaths, filling your lungs on the in-breath and releasing tension on the out-breath.
Now, move your awareness to your second chakra (your sacral chakra) located in your lower abdomen, above the pelvic bone. Take a few moments just being aware of this chakra.
If your mind gets distracted just gently bring it back to awareness of this chakra.
Now imagine that you are breathing healing energy into this area. On your out-breath, imagine releasing any dis-ease or tension from this area.
Notice any sensations, images, colors, and feelings associated with your sacral chakra.
Now, breathe this chakra’s characteristic color, orange, into this area, filling it with the color orange. Feel the enlivening color orange as it fills this chakra.
You might want to imagine that your chakra opens like a rose or a lotus flower, expanding and receiving nurturing universal life energy.
You may want to reflect on the action word and affirmation for this chakra: I feel. Feel this chakra’s power that is associated with creativity, passion, and sexuality.
Now just be and fully experience, this subtle, yet powerful aspect of your self.
When ready to complete this meditation, take a deep breath, bring your awareness to your eyes, and slowly open them.
Take a few minutes to reflect on this experience of your sacral chakra.
Nurturing Yourself
What makes you feel really good, pampered, and cared for?
It might be taking long showers or soaking in the tub. Or, you might feel most nurtured when you take a short nap, or a walk in nature.
Once you’ve identified at least one activity that you love to do, set aside 15 to 30 minutes a day to do it. Put it on your calendar and treat it as sacred.
Exercises that Move Energy and Promote Flexibility
When trying new exercises, always be gentle with yourself. Build strength and flexibility gradually. Do not force a movement when it hurts or doesn’t feel right.
Here are a few example exercises that promote the flow of energy and flexibility in the sacral chakra.
- Pelvic Rock: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and parallel. Allow your knees to soften by bending them slightly. Slowly begin to rock your pelvis back and forth. Repeat several times.
- Hip Circles: Stand with your knees relaxed and slightly bent. Drop your pelvis forward so that it is in your central line of gravity. Now make slow circles with your hip. Make your movements as smooth as possible. Start with small circles then gently expand them. Do three clockwise, then three counter clockwise.
Releasing Pent Up Emotions
Sometimes emotions and thought patterns can form blockages to the natural flow of energy in a chakra.
If you feel an emotion while doing the exercises above, express it fully. If your emotions are strong and/or persistent, use a body worker or counselor to help you release them.
Sacral Chakra Key Points
The sacral chakra, one of the seven major chakras, supports creativity in all dimensions. It nurtures healthy sexuality and is a source for passion and your ability to provide for yourself.
You can help this chakra’s health through using the suggestions above.
